IMPORTANT HOME AFFAIRS ANNOUNCEMENT: SOUTH AFRICAN IDs AND FUTURE DIGITAL SERVICES
SACCUSA encourages all South Africans living in the United States to take note of the changes announced by Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber on 1 October 2026.
Key dates for green ID books:
📅 31 March 2027: Production of green barcoded ID books will end.
📅 31 March 2028: Green ID books will cease to be recognised as valid identification. They are not being invalidated immediately.
Smart ID access for South Africans abroad
Home Affairs has announced plans to enable South Africans living abroad to obtain Smart ID cards. This is a significant development for our community, particularly those who have previously been unable to access the card overseas. U.S. application locations, booking arrangements and implementation dates still require confirmation.
Application fees
The announcement provides for fee exemptions for first-time applicants and people over 60. Any separate overseas service or courier charges should be confirmed when the application arrangements are publishe
A digital ID—and future passport services
Home Affairs has demonstrated a working prototype of a voluntary smartphone-based digital ID. The longer-term vision includes digital document storage and simpler passport renewal services. These future services are not yet generally available, and the physical Smart ID card will remain an option.
SACCUSA welcomes the commitment to improve access for South Africans abroad. Our planned webinar with DHA officials in the first week of November will provide an opportunity to seek clarity on what these changes mean for our community.
Please share this update with fellow South Africans and await official U.S. rollout instructions before making arrangements to apply.
