More than a directory: Building connections across the South African community in the USA

No matter where we settle in the United States, many South Africans have something in common. We miss the familiar taste of home, we enjoy hearing a South African accent unexpectedly, and we naturally look for ways to support one another. Yet despite living in an age where information is everywhere, it can still be surprisingly difficult to discover South African-owned businesses, community groups, events, and opportunities beyond our own local networks.

That simple observation eventually became the inspiration for SaffasUS.

While social media is wonderful for bringing people together, information quickly disappears as new posts replace old ones. I wanted to create something more permanent – a place where businesses, organizations, events, and community resources could remain easy to find all year round.

What began as an idea for a business directory has evolved into a community hub where South Africans across the United States can discover formal and informal South-African owned businesses, service providers, and even authors & artists. A platform to connect with fellow Saffas, find events, explore community organizations & social clubs, browse classifieds, and build lasting connections.

As the community continues to grow, it’s already rewarding to see the impact. Listing owners have begun receiving enquiries from South African-owned businesses abroad that are interested in collaborating and building new relationships. Every new business listed, every community organization that joins, every event shared, and every connection made strengthens our South African community across the United States.

I’m grateful to SACCUSA for the opportunity to share the SaffasUS story. We share a common vision of supporting South Africans and South African-owned businesses, creating opportunities, and strengthening our community across the United States. I look forward to working together to help even more South Africans discover, connect, and support one another.

If you’d like to explore the growing community, discover South African-owned businesses, or create your own free Community Member Profile, visit SaffasUS.com and follow SaffasUS on Facebook for the latest community news, events, and opportunities.

Because when South Africans support one another, our entire community grows stronger.
